Program Notes: Hush
“For last year's words belong to last year's language
And next year's words await another voice.” - T.S. Eliot
Rubiks present five contemporary works exploring the power of voice, breath and gesture. Australian composer Annie Hui-Hsin Hsieh’s ‘The thin air between skins’ explores shimmering, nuanced exchanges between performers, Annika Socolofsky’s feminist rager lullaby invokes the fragility and fury of the female voice, and Dmitri Tymoczko’s electroacoustic song cycle 'Ghosts' remixes the words of poet Emily Dickinson to surreal effect, in a world premiere performance featuring acclaimed London-based mezzo-soprano Lotte Betts-Dean.
